Historic norms say to use pump flanges that fit loosely and if pumping hurts, then use a bigger size.

New research and clinical case studies propose that taking time to find the correct size and shape for each nipple provides comfort for the mother and maximum milk production.

What research and case studies are showing is an average nipple/flange size around 15 mm with 9mm to 38 mm size flanges available to test with. This, however is only the starting point. When a mother pumps with similar size flanges in different shapes, usually 1 or 2 flanges stand out as most comfortable for her.

You know this same discomfort when wearing bras and shoes. The same size feels very different when tried in different styles.

There is a good chance you will feel better with new flanges instead of the 24/25 mm classic cone-shaped pair that came with your pump.
