Mother-to-mother support is the most important factor in breastfeeding exclusivity and duration--how much and how long--babies breastfeed. The Breastfeeding Café is a small, local community that aims to provide friendship, breastfeeding support and education.

This group is for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and babies looking to make new friends, and deepen their breastfeeding knowledge in a safe and supportive breastfeeding community. Meetings are moderated by Donna Bruschi, IBCLC.

Join like-minded people to talk about babies, breastfeeding, feeding and mothering.  A meeting generally goes like this:

One of my favorite books on the market today is Nap-a-Roo baby board book In full disclosure, I am very bias towards this book… Why? Because I wrote it! Nap-a-Roo is my first book published, one of three currently in my Creative Kids Board Book Series.  This board book is short, sweet, and to the point.  Little eyes gravitate towards the bright images and catchy rhyming text.

When writing the book I focused on quick text that is easy to read and say out loud.  It is truly fun to read!  As the author, Kristy Kurjan, I wanted to create a book that parents actually enjoy reading to their children.

The illustrations were created with developing brains in mind…. Think whimsical animals that are quirky and fun loving.  Little ones love the bright colors that seem to jump off the page.  The illustrator, Tyler Parker, focused on simple backgrounds and making the animals have personality. His talent shines through in the images!
Nap-a-Roo board book has won numerous awards including the 2014 Silver Moonbeam Award for Best Board Book, the 2015 Silver IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Picture Book (0-3), and was named a Finalist in the 9th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards.

Critiques of the book say it is too short however the short nature of the book is by design.  Parents love to read the book because it is short… Thus, if you have to read it ten times, you are still in good spirits when the inevitable 11th request to read again is made.  Nap time routines make mid afternoon naps easier to manage, but they don’t have to be long and drawn out! Short and sweet, that is what Nap-a-Roo offers!

So, yes, I fully recommend Nap-a-Roo baby board book for ages 0-3.  This book makes a great newborn gift as not many people own the book already.  As an independently published book, it is not found on everyone’s book shelf yet, which I think makes it even more special!

Every time he would latch on tears came to my eyes from the pain. He would flail his arms and seem to search frantically for a nipple that was right in front of him. He did manage to latch on at times but I just knew something wasn’t right. I just couldn’t deal with the fact that it was so painful. This was supposed to be a wonderful experience for me and my baby. Instead it was turning out to be exactly the opposite.

"Despite all my education and help from nurses, lactation consultants and friends, I allowd to struggle with breastfeeding for those first few days in the hospital. I had promised myself that I would breastfeed but my cracked nipples were making it too hard for me.

"Exhausted and discouraged I decided to try something different. I had a lot of experience hand rearing puppies and other mammals when I worked at the Philadelphia Zoo during high school. Most newborn mammals feed much better in the tummy-down position. I decided to try this out with my son. Right away Kiel was able to latch on comfortably and nurse vigorously. I couldn’t believe it! Although my nipples were still a little tender I had very little pain. In fact the process become so enjoyable. I could finally relax and Kiel was so happy.

"It took a few days for my nipples to heal after the initial trauma from breastfeeding incorrectly. The tummy-down position was all we needed. Then as time passed Kiel and I got stronger and we tried out a lot of new positions. We were just like new dance partners…once we mastered the basics we were ready for new variations!

"I found that breastfeeding my son was so enjoyable as long as I had him in the right position. Then when I returned to work as an Obstetrician I occasionally recommended this technique to new moms who were struggling with getting their newborns to latch or having incisional pain from a C-section.

"I was hesitant to openly recommend it because the nurses would often tell the moms it was “wrong”. But I knew that these moms were desperate and it seemed to work when nothing else would.

"Over the years I learned that my “trick” wasn’t magic, it has strong scientific roots. I had studied current neuroscience, brain research, evolutionary medicine and lactation in humans and other mammals. I thought that I had uncovered the answer but all I had was a large piece of the puzzle.
